Favilla Vintage Model U-2 Solid Mahogany Soprano Ukulele ca. 1930s

Favilla Model U-2 Mahogany (1930s) Soprano Ukulele

In 1959, the business was taken over by Hercules Favilla (Herk) and the company name was changed to “Favilla Guitars, Inc.”  In late 1963, they moved the production facilities to Long Island, with four times the space, they hit a peak building around 3,500 guitars a year.  However, by 1967, the company were struggling with financial difficulties, due to the growing popularity of the electric guitar and had to downsize dramatically, until 1973 when their commercial production ceased entirely.

In 1975, Herk’s son, Thomas Favilla, opened up a store in New York in which he continued to build a few custom instruments a year, until finally selling the business in 1986.  Other than in the 1920’s, ukulele production made up less than 10% of the overall production of Favilla instruments, and this fell even lower after 1960, when the ukulele’s popularity declined.  Favilla did not produce any soprano ukes after 1968, however they produced baritone ukes until 1985 and guitars up until they ceased production altogether in 1986.

Favilla built fine string instruments for four generations, considering themselves “stringed instrument builders”, Favillas are renowned for their playability.  Often compared to the Martin Style 0 in terms of its ease of play, precise handling, low action and rich, powerful sound, but without the high price tag, this solid mahogany Favilla U-2 soprano ukulele, from the 1930’s is a phenomenal find.  It is in fantastic condition, with only a few minor scratches, which is remarkable considering its age.

This Favilla U-2 has a solid matte finish mahogany body, neck, 12-fret fingerboard, bridge, nut and saddle.  The headstock features the “Favilla” crest, which indicates it was hand-built by the Favilla family in America, post-1920.  The sound-hole is decorated with subtle inlaid purfling, while three large fret markers and the friction tuning keys contrast perfectly with the deep mahogany.  This ukulele plays like a dream, with an incredible resonant sound associated with these beautifully crafted Favilla stringed instruments.  It comes with the lovely hard case that can be seen in the pictures below.
